Default timing belt tensioner spring missing?

Timing belt skipped a tooth and had 2 missing cogs on belt. 1987 d21 3.0L. Isnt there supposed to a spring on this tensioner?

IIRC, its inside the tensioner pulley. It's probably wore out if you skipped a tooth.

Isn't it possible for the spring to drop down into the oil pan, too? It it pops out, I mean. If so, better drop that pan, clean it out good, stick it back on with a new gasket and sealer. Spring could by lying in the bottom of the pan, I think.

No, the oil pan is isolated from the timing belt area.

Yeah...that's right. The front of the pan bolts up to the bottom of the timing cover. I forgot...

He's talking v6, not the 4 cyl. There should be a spring on that tensioner pulley. It would be difficult for it to pop off. If it did if would be wedged down by the oil pump if it's not there then someone might have skipped installing it.

The tensioner spring serves next to zero purpose on the V6. All it does is holds a little bit of tension on the belt until you get the idler pulley torqued in place.

Maybe the last person to change the belt decided it wasn't needed and left it off.

I've seen a Honda spring that fell off and ruined the belt. (And the spring) I can understand the reasoning behind leaving it off.

about 16yrs ago i literally almost put my eye out once installing the tensioner spring on a honda. i was pulling on it super hard with needle nose pliers. they slipped and i stabbed myself super had in the bridge of the nose with the point of the pliers. literally a millimeter any direction id have lost an eye.



Ill never pull with pliers again. I always push away from me. even as i write this it kinda of gives me a chill.

I feel your pain. Years ago I broke one of my teeth off using a large pair of channel locks to force a drum brake spring into place. Lesson learned.

I actually have one of those timing belt tensioner tools that I bought specifically to do the belt on a VW. In theory it can be done with a large pair of 90 degree snap ring pliers but for the $10 or whatever it cost for the tool it's not worth trying to find another way to do it.
