Default Vibration in 5th Gear

On my way home today on the highway, I noticed that I was getting a vibration that was only seeming to be in 5th gear. I have been told that my carrier bearing will need replacing in the near future. Would that be a possible cause? It felt like a short shudder when going up a hill and accelerating.

U-joint(s), CSB, yoke's bearings, carrier bearings, damaged/unbalanced driveshaft are all possible.

Could it be speed related? Only asking because you'll be pushing speed in this gear.

Does it happen/start at a specific speed?
Does it also do this, in 4th gear, at that speed?

Probably at least as bad as a Jeep so worse than a cow.

It doesn't do it in 4th, and I was doing maybe 70. I didn't notice anything driving in this morning but about half way home i noticed it. It wasn't all the time, maybe a few seconds here, than about for 30 seconds it would stop. I don't think it was the road because I go that way every day and only just now had that issue.

OK, sounds like something is warming up, falling out of spec and causing this. Hope you get this found, before total failure... but I doubt it will be terminal.

Does the transmission whine? Basically you are listening for a noise that is present in every gear except 5th. There are two little roller bearings under the gear cluster for 5th and if they go bad can cause that. That's not a common failure point at all, though. I'd start with the carrier bearing. If it's never been replaced it probably needs it anyways.

No, I have not heard a whining sound.
