Default Door Handles

So back with door handle problems.

I changed the passenger door handle that was broke. I don't use the door much, because my daughter has her car seat there. For the last 2 months, it's been janky, but as long as I stuck the key in and turned it to unlock as I pulled the handle it would open fine.

I broke the driver side door handle, because Nissan used garbage u-nre-enforced plastic for the door handle. I pulled it up and it cracked on the front part of the door handle.

Today after church, I replaced it. I put the pin in the hole, and adjusted it so I only needed to pull the handle a little and it would open the door. Repeatedly did it, didn't seem to have any issues. Awesome, locked the doors and went inside.

Realized I needed to go to the store few hours later and I go out, put the key in and turn the key and instead of feeling the pressure of the lock going up, it turned and nothing happened. Figure I'd go to the passenger side and unlock it that way. The lock popped up about a quarter it normally does and of course doesn't unlock.

I'll be able to get into it tomorrow, but can someone tell me what happened? Why was the door working fine, but now the lock not work? What can I do to fix it? I have looked on Youtube and the videos on adjusting the door handle pins are lacking and I don't know why the door lock (key) isn't working anymore.

Any help would be appreciated.

to go from working one minute to not working the next minute sounds like something popped apart. Might have broken one of those plastic clips or it slipped off.

You can get new clips at the Dorman section in Autozone.

I would replace all the clips. Also pull the lock mechanism and clean really well with WD and a light coat of lithium grease.

Usually the reason the door handles break is that the trucks are 25+ years old and the door latch assembly is gunked up. Try removing, cleaning, and lubricating the door latches. The extra force required to operate a dirty latch will often cause the little plastic clips to fail.

The handle and the pins are brand new. The yellow clip that connects the pin and the door handle are new too.

Iím going to get it unlocked and see if I can figure out where the problem is exactly.

Any good videos or photos on how to disassemble the mechanism and lock?

Itís pretty simple. Just disconnect the rods from it and remove the mounting screws. Then just clean with brake parts cleaner, lube, and reinstall.

Alright, I will look in there again, I couldn't see much of the mechanism, because of the window rail in front of it, so it looked more complex.
