Default Transmission 1987 d21 5 speed

Hello all just picked up a 1987 d21. The transmission is growling in 1,3, and 5 gear. Just wondering the name of the transmission if searching for another? Also will pathfinder Tranny work? The engine is 3.0L v6. Thanks for any advice.

The manual trannies are usually pretty bulletproof, have you tried to drain and replace the fluid? Have you checked to see if it has fluid?

I'd say 86.5-95.

The synchronizers were worn out in mine. The transmission shop got me for about $1600 to replace them.

A used transmission is a lot less, even if you have to drive to get one. There is always somebody parting out a Hardbody.

So while researching this tranny swap ran across a couple things.Very hard to pin down exactly what the transmission is called in a 1987 nissan d21 4x4 5 speed manual. Ive got FS 5R 30, FS 5R 30A, L4N71B, L3N71B, FS5W71G. Any way the fs5r30a has a buletin that the filler hole is too low. Guys are adding 1.5L through the shifter hole or tipping the vehicle. Ive tried checking the vin to see which transmission i have to be certain before i add fluid to try and stop the tranny noise.

The FS5W71G might be for the 4-cylinder. My V6 uses the FS5R30A. The L3 and L4 might be automatic transmissions. Somewhere, they were manual 4-speeds - maybe the FS5R30?

You can overfill it if you want, but mine has never been overfilled. And it does a lot of work the way it is.

FS5R30 for the V6 models. My money is on the little pilot bearing where the mainshaft goes into the back of the input shaft. Does it quiet down in 4th?
