I know it's not "NISSAN" per se', but close enough, right?
Looking at a 2004 FX35, but I think it has a head gasket leak on the exhaust side. Tried to drive it home ( less than 10 miles ) and it started knocking and smoking, then quit. A hour later, it started up and did the same thing. No indicators on the dash lit up, but it's been sitting for a few years and who knows what needs attention. I would like to get it running right first. How hard are head gaskets on this motor? Was more damage done by it running hot for a few minutes? ANY info on this motor and SUV would be greatly appreciated. Finally got it home late last night and going to check all the fluids this afternoon.

Supposed to be the same engine as the 350z. Should be a pretty fun ride.

VQ35 I believe. Those have a lot more going on than the VG engines do. A word to the wise, if you decide to take this project on you may find it's less work to replace the engine altogether, depending on how far gone it is.
The hardest part of the job will probably be getting it timed correctly. I believe those have multiple chains and VVT.

The VQDE motor is a terrific one. I had a 2009 Infinity G35 Sport Coupe with the sport suspension and that motor KICKED!
I test drove an Infinity FX35 with 60k on the clock and with the added weight of an SUV. It still accelerated the same as my G35 with only 10k on its clock. I would pull the original motor and send it out for a rebuild. You don’t want any surprises. |
