Timing Chain Job.... How Long?

Hey Buds,

I'm doing a Timing chain job on a KA24e with my mechanic. I ordered the timing chain kit from Rock. That's the Single over-head Cam motor.

He's pretty competent and is good with basic mechanics

• Bout How long should this job take?
• (assuming all goes well)
• I'm changing the water pump too (while i'm here)

You should be able to get it done within a day. Probably the hardest part is breaking the seal where the timing cover bolts to the block. They can be stuck on there pretty good. Being that you have a 2WD I'd also recommend dropping the oil pan and resealing it afterwards, either with RTV or an actual gasket. While that isn't completely necessary IMO it makes it easier to get the timing cover off and allows for a nice clean seal going back together. The bottom of the timing cover bolts to the oil pan and I've found that if you stuff new RTV in there next to the old factory stuff it usually leaks afterwards.

The water pump is an easy job. Hitachi makes the OE ones but Aisin also makes one for these.

Oh, and after you've set the engine at TDC take the distributor cap off and mark the rotor and body of the distributor. Getting it timed correctly afterwards is probably the biggest thing people struggle with on this job and that'll save you a lot of time and headache putting it back together.

Yeah, I’d say a good day if the engine is fairly clean and you have a competent helper to organize and clean parts for reinstallation. The last couple I did took me quite a while because they were major repair jobs and I was replacing all kinds of stuff to get the trucks up to snuff again. They were also greasy messes so every single bolt and part was time consuming to clean. If yours is a mess try to pressure wash the front of the engine and the valve cover before you dig in.

I did one on my Z24i in 5 hours one Tuesday evening. Needed it to get to work the next day.

Its middle of the Road by SKP (whom i've bought from before).

I hope it works well for you. The tensioner on the much more expensive ITM kit failed on me quickly, years ago. So I had to redo the job. :-{

I used a DNJ brand kit the first time I did this job, although it doesn't look like Rockauto sells those anymore. It lasted about 4 years before the plastic broke off one of the guides and it started making a racket. No issues with the actual chain part of it though.
