It's been years since I did one, but I seem to recall using a propane torch to run the old wax out of the housing.
I also recall that it was a waste of time. My real problem was that I hadn't gone through the adjustment sequence by the book. I used a Chilton manual and read every line, and looked at every illustration, and it worked great after that.
There is a gap that has to be set first, and then you adjust the screw or something. I've forgotten the details because once I set it, I never had to mess with it again.

Too often we try to solve a problem by adjusting the TBI when the problem is elsewhere. The TBI never needs readjusting; just a little cleaning and lube from time to time.

That there is a mouthful. Especially since there is a small, rubber ring spacer behind the housing which must be held in place while you start each screw. I dropped them several times. They are tiny and very good at hiding once loose. The 10 second installation turned into closer to 20 minutes. This did cause a problem in that the adjustment screw sat on the corner of the plunger due to its expansion. This made adjustment difficult. In fact it took a few miles and readjustments before I was able to tune it in. Now it idles calm an quiet and you hardly know it's running while stopped at a light.

I couldn't be happier.
