Default Anyone familiar with older Chevy trucks?

I've been working on my coworkers 90 Chevy C1500, 2wd, 5.7 auto, long bed.

The other day I replaced the alternator and my driveway is on a angle so she applied the parking brake, the truck doesn't get used a lot so some parts were rusty.

The tailgate handle would not open the tailgate, I thought one of the plastic clips broke and a rod came off but when I took the handle apart the clips and rods were fine but the two arms that are supposed to move were so rusted they would not move, I lubed them and worked them until it worked correctly.

But, when she left to go home she called me and said the truck felt like it had a drag on it, and the brake light in the gauge cluster was lit but bot bright like when you apply the parking brake. I told her the emergency brake may not have released.

We ordered more parts for it and today she brought it back over, I installed the new parts ( high beam bulbs and a wiper) than jacked up the rear of the truck to check the brakes, the drivers side rotated easily but the pass. side wheel would not turn ( truck was in neutral, brake off),

i ended up loosening the parking brake cable for the pass. wheel at the adjuster and the wheel started to free up enough where I could get the drum off, I cleaned the shoes and rotor ( leaky wheel cylinder) and adjusted the star wheel, wheel rotates freely now,

We took the truck for a drive and it would not up-shift when in the overdrive or drive positions and the speedometer does not work, she told me about that on her way home also ( the speedometer not working).

Truck runs fine and drives fine if I start in the 1 position than shift up to 2 but once I put it in "D", it feels like it's slipping.

I looked this up online and some say it's the VSS on the trans but I can not get to it as the cat converter is in the way.

I unplugged the rear anti lock brake module under the hood and the brake light went out, I was told you can drive it with the module unplugged just she won't have anti lock brakes, truck seems to brake just fine with out it

Anyone ever deal with this? solutions?

Thanks

It is cause Chevy!

In all seriousness, I would begin by changing the fluid and tranny filter.

I don't think it is a trans issue, it runs fine in "1" and "2" , Fluid was full and clean, no burnt smell

Older truck...you should be ashamed. That is on the new side.

If the cat is in the way...cut it off.

I sorta doubt that the VSS controls the shift points, on that year. But, the speedometer not working could be a clue. Check for a blown fuse.

chevytalk.com

I wonder if the TV cable is out of adjustment. It controls line pressure in the trans. I don't remember how to adjust it. It is easy to do. You'll need help.

I did a short search on chevytalk and only found a recomendation to do a websearch. Below is what I found.

How many miles does it have on it? My old ranger had 147k on it and was doing the same thing. Started off where it wouldn't go past 3, then only 1 and 2 worked, then only 1 and reverse, then only 1. Transmission needed to be replaced. It got traded in on cash for clunkers.

Is it a 3 or 4 speed? I don't believe that the 700r4 is electronically controlled. The older 3 speeds definitely are not. How does it shift if you put it in '2' and let it shift from first to second? A lot of older cars have a transmission kickdown cable that goes to the throttle body but that usually controls how firm the shifts are, as well as how readily the transmission kicks down if you step on it. That's about the extent of my knowledge. I'll bet mytmouz would know.

See if you can find someone with an "old school" scan tool, like an OTC Monitor 2000/4000. Use it to pull data stream from speed sensor and try hitting the ABS as well.

I would replace the VSS, it should fix the speedo and possibly the 3/4 shift. 88/89s I believe were the start of the 4L60Es. They were still 700R4s but GM did start doing more electronics in them.

On another note, your pump may not be able to apply enough pressure to engage the 3/4 clutch pack. Above the manual lever that shift linkage connects to there is a pressure plug about 4" above that. you can hook up a pressure gauge (0-300psi) to it and see what your pressure is at.
