My 1990 has the older style, I think. Top feed if I am remembering correctly. IDKW they changed the design; I'd go with whatever was stock on your year.

AutoZone loans a "block tester" tool. Use it to check for a head gasket leak, etc. Be sure to get the special fluid that comes with the tool -- you'll need about half a little bottle of it.

Do a smoke test too, to check for vac leaks; see Youtube for "paint can smoke tester". But could be many causes, unfortunately!
