It’s almost definitely the oil pump shaft. Check this thread to get it aligned correctly. Once you KNOW it’s right, then we can look into other possible causes....

My wife had a 97 that suddenly blew the head gasket. There were deep marks on all of the pistons. Who knows how long those had been there?

You could use a bore scope to look through the spark plug holes at the top of the pistons to see if there is any indication of contact with the valves.

Use a timing light to set the timing to 10. If you’re able to adjust it to the correct setting, your problem isn’t timing related. Make sure to disconnect the TPS

Is it a 4cyl frontier or a V6? All of the V6 frontiers were built on a 4wd chassis, even the 2wds. So those spindles will only work if it’s a 4cyl 2wd.
