Default Transfer Case Fluid

Just wondering what people's opinions are on fluid for the transfer case? I've read that it can take either ATF for gear oil. IF I use gear oil does gl4 vs gl5 matter since it's not the transmission?

Thanks guys!

well, it depends on your trans. if you have an auto then auto trans fluid, if its manual the GL-4. you don't want unlike fluids mixing.

I've read you should use the same (for manual trans) and t-case and gl-5 is highly recommended and not to use gl-4. How true is this? Dealer is the only one I've found with gl-5 and its likes $14 a quart

Never use GL5 in the manual trans. You will kill the synchro.

I think my manual says GL5 in the t case.

See I read that gl-4 will kill the syncros. So I should use gl-4 in the manual trans and t-case?

my local walmart sells genuine GL4 and GL5. i didnt have time to get a pump and change my trans fluid last year. so i just paid 25 bucks at the garage i used to work at and they did it for me.

i changed my rear end fluid though. it cost me less than 10 bucks for the fluid.

per the FSM:

"Dextron type Automatic Transmission fluid is used for the transfer in the factory, Never add gear oil (75W90) to automatic transmission fluid"

Also:

"When changing transfer oil completely, either "Dextron" type Auto Transmission fluid or gear oil (75W90) may be used. Do not mix ATF and gear oil."
