When it went down, about a week before, it started rattling at a certain rpm. Then a week later it got hot. Let it sit over night then started it back up the next day. And it was knocking like crazy so we shut it back off. It's sat for about 4-5 years now. I know it's not much to go off of. But I haven't touched it since it's been parked.im just now getting to where I can tear into it and rebuild, so any kits out there y'all recommend for a stock rebuild? And what should I look for when tearing it down? Also what tools would you recommend to have when stating this project?

torque wrench and a valve spring compressor are really the only specialty tools you need.
sounds like rod knock/spun bearing. you might be better off looking for a low mileage block/head to swap peripheral parts to and drop in. |

Think that'd be better than rebuilding the original?

Have you checked Craigslist? You should be able to find somebody either parting out a truck or somebody selling a truck that’s been wrecked or has a bad transmission or something like that. You should be able to find a serviceable engine for $5-600

Expand your search. A 4-5 hour drive is a lot faster than a rebuild.

Looks as if plenty of shops sell crankshaft kits for ~$200. I'd tear it down too, first, to see if there's more significant damage.
Lots of tools (and space) needed. Have, for example, a cherry picker, engine sling/leveler, and engine stand? And a good machine shop nearby? Pulling the engine out of my 1990 4x4 was interesting -- the front differential had to come out. (Left my manual trans in place) I have pics ...

My uncle has his own tractor mechanic shop I can use. And a machining shop is judt 40 min away.
But an update is that I found a wrecked 94 Nissan for 700. But will the 94 motor plug and play to the 97? |
