Default What are the these hoses and where do the go?

While replacing the reverse light switch on transmission I found these two hoses of different sizes.

The smaller one is connected to the top of transmission and just hangs down.

The larger one with the metal piece goes up into the engine bay but I wasn’t able to trace its origin.

Are they supposed to hook together? What do they do? Since they aren’t hooked up, what shouldn’t be working?

should they be hooked to something? It looks like the metal end was in a hose but it does not fit the one just above it.

I discovered these were the vent tubes for the transfer case and hooked it back up... fast forward to last week, I found out what happens when this hose is not hooked up. My transfer case crapped out and when I took it apart it was full of water

I am now in the process of replacing the transfer case
