Default Nissan D21 1987 VG30i 4x4 V6 timing belt broke??

I have a 1987 vg30i 4x4. I was on the interstate 3 days ago.. After 50 miles the engine just cut out.. Good thing i have AAA. I Towed it to two shops they both said the timing belt broke and the engine is shot or grenaded. . Both shops said they dont want to fix it. You all think the motor is pretty much shot? My understanding is the valve train was eaten. and it will need ring job and rebuild etc. I dont think they did compression test. When I was trying to restart it on interstate and it did turn and keep spinning like it was going to start.. im sure that did extra damage... but i didn't know it was the timing belt. i figured it was something electronic.. (rain)

I read could be fuel relay or many things. Where to start and easiest way to check the timing belt is still not snapped?

Should i just pull a spark plug and check for metal ?? usually thats how you tell i thought.. then use a compression tester which i have.

From my experience the valves will snap closed without a belt. It makes doing a timing belt a PITA. There is a chance you smacked a valve though. Best bet is to pull the heads and check the valves and seats. Check for damage to the pistons.

You can get a borescope that connects to a smartphone and look inside the spark plug holes to inspect the top of the pistons for damage from hitting the valves

There's no harm in putting another belt on it to see if it will run. You might get lucky. If the starter skips when cranking it over you most likely have bent valves.

My vg30i is still running after my belt broke, and that was in 2013.
