Hi all....so I'm thinking of purchasing an 85 hard body with a blown head. Now the owner claims to have replaced it more than once and had everything checked, head, block, etc. He says each time he replaces it if he puts it in a bind off road it blows the gasket..... ever heard of this? It's a z24 not sure if he ment twisting the chassis bind or engine load type bind....

Probably popping the gasket between #3 and 4 cylinders. Wonder if the head is being installed and torqued correctly. Those engines should have a head re-torque once in a while, cuts down on the gasket going to hell.
And just so you know, there were no Hardbodies sold as 1985 trucks. Some were built in 1985 but sold as 1986.5 trucks. If it's an 85 it's still a 720 model truck.

If it's got 4 headlights it's a 720. I believe the 720 had the z24i. If it pops a gasket due to twisting it would have to twist and bid the entire block or the head. Pretty sure either would cause more issues. Likely not the right spec for the torque then he puts a load on it with the truck bound up and it blows the gasket.

Hell Idk proper labels....y'all tell me....but yea says it's z24. Are they tty bolts? Thinking maybe he didn't get new ones or something....Idk. I agree twisting of the motor would cause more trouble. Just going off what he vaguely described to me. I'll get my photo bucket up and y'all tell me what the model is

The labels are important for a few reasons, the two trucks are different mechanically, electrically and visually. Yes, that's a 720. Solid little trucks. I'd be inclined to think he didn't torque correctly.

I don't think so. I really don't know as I have a v6 in my rig. Chilton's or Hanes manual. Hopefully someone knows where to find a 720 FSM. You could grab the 89 hardbody FSM for the motor though I can't guarantee it wasn't changed up between the model years.
'bama and JP2Code have a link to the hardbody FSMs in their signatures. I really need to do the same.
