Default Out with the Old, in with the New

I've had three Hardbodies over the years (trucks I mean :) but with the arrival of the kiddo back in July there just hasn't been room for both mama and baby at the same time. So after a fairly thorough and brand agnostic search ended up finding a decent deal on a 2015 Frontier Crew Cab SV LWB 4x4 with around 16,000 miles on it.

The last '95 Hardbody is probably going to end up with my parents. With only 96,000 miles on it as of this week it's mechanically and bodily decent, though quite far from perfect.

Now to figure out what to do to it. Wife already wants a backup camera, and after driving home in the dark (we found it in a different city, getting it was a day-trip) I begrudgingly agree. Also want to do at least the wiring for towing, possibly even a hitch or a rear bumper with an integrated 2" receiver.

Glad you are staying with Nissan, alot of people change brands once they upgrade.

Hope you got a good deal?

I think I got a fair deal. In this town they were asking more for 4x2s than this 4x4 going on a road trip to get it.

I may have to see if there's anything that can be done to improve the turning radius, even if filing on the bump-stops a bit. Turns pretty badly compared to what I thought it would.

I do have to admit that I did not specifically seek to remain brand-loyal. I've owned a lot of Chrysler products too, and I have connections that would probably let me get a slightly better price on a Ram if that had been an option. Wife didn't want another full-sized truck in addition to the '82 D350, so it was either sell the '82, or get another smaller truck. No one really makes a truly small truck anymore, but Nissan's is the least expensive of what now would be mid-sized, and the fact that with the 2018s they've been building almost the same truck for fourteen years, makes it easy to find parts. Dodge had almost the same truck from '72-'93 and they had the van from '71 to '03, and parts for those are plentiful, so it seemed like a good idea to get a modern equivalent. This Nissan hit the right checkboxes.

I've been looking all over for a light blue one with a roof rack. It seems like they must have built maybe 10 in that configuration lol

Tell me about it. When I worked there I didn't see many of them. Even less were a stick.

Definitely is a bit weird driving a truck that's an automatic. I've had a total of five running trucks now and this is the first auto. I get this nagging feeling that there's something I'm supposed to be doing. It's also effortless with the power, that DOHC 4.0 V6 is no slouch. It won't give my '95 Impala SS a run for its money but no trouble hitting 65mph getting onto the freeway with the air conditioning running.

I was rather surprised by how few trucks, both mid-sized and full-sized, are available with a 6' bed anymore if they have a true useful crew-cab, at least in half-ton/class-1 rating. Could've had a 6' bed with a "quad cab" or some other name, but I wanted to be able to reasonably comfortably sit in the back myself, not just relegate that space to kids. What really annoyed me was the crew cab fullsize trucks with 5'6" beds. They offer 'em with full 6' beds, but they're special-order and no one apparently orders them. In half-ton I found only a handful that weren't either ridiculously overpriced or else weren't so high-mileage as to not be worth it. There was a Lincoln Mark LT that looked nice that had the bigger bed, but it had Michigan plates on it. Didn't figure that did the undercarriage any favors.

Hopefully I'll get 20+ years out of this truck. We'll see. Already bought an oil filter for the 20,000 mile service and a Haynes book for the basic and moderate maintenance. Probably going to get a hitch or a replacement bumper with integrated hitch.
