Default Late '96 Charcoal Canister Woes

As I'm sure most of you know, there are two types of charcoal canister for the hardbody series: Up to 02/1996 and from 02/1996 onwards. The earlier ones are reasonable in cost whereas the new ones are not. However, they look exactly the same, and even the 2000 Nissan Xterra has one that looks just like it. So, I have a few questions:

1. Can I use an older canister on my truck.
2. If not, how do I (if possible) empty this one out and clean it/repurpose it?
3. If neither of those are possible, where can I get the one I need for >$100?
