GaBlu, my 97 4cyl sounded like shit unless I ran 97 octane. Like a rattling, ticking mess. Especially under a load.

Does your state use a different octane rating for fuel? Here in Washington state, it's 87 (Regular), 89 (Mid-grade), and either 91 or 92 (Supreme). Anything higher than that you have to go to one of the racing fuel outlets. Their fuel can run as high as 108 octane, but I never go there.

AND almost forgot the wiring pigtail coming out of the distributor looks to be in horrible ( almost completely frayed).
What RPM does it ping at, across the board or down low?

Have you tried checking for codes? The ECU could have something going on.

You won't generally see a Check Engine Light (CEL) unless something is up with the Federal Emissions.

And, does anyone know what this grill is from? I bought it from a guy on Facebook Marketplace, but it certainly doesn't fit my 1994.

Most noticeable pinging is underload in any gear.

Have not pulled the codes, yet. May have time this evening to yank out the pass seat and check those.

Have been looking to see if there was an adapter for my old ODB1 Snap-On 2500 scanner for this truck.

AL - thanks for the tip on trying better gas. Have dumped a can of SeaFoam in the 1/2 tank that is in the truck now.
