Nope. It's a 3.4. The 3.4 is actually a very reliable engine, it's just that this one has not been well maintained.

I keep telling my buddy to 3.4 swap his wife's 3.0. That 4runner is on motor #2 and that motor is on its 12th head gasket.

Tell your buddy to sell that 4-Runner and get her a solid Pathy. Or maybe even an Xterra, as long as it is 03-04 with low miles. Those were probably the best years before they started jacking up the size on them and ruining the whole thing.

His wife isn't getting rid of any of her 4runners. She has a 3.0 POS and a newer one we call the minivan because it's so low to the ground. The 3.0 is being prepped for a manual swap right now.

Removed all of the emissions stuff, capped off all the inlets/outlets under the hood. Still have to get the ones going to the gas tank removed and add a little filter to the bottom of the breather or just cap it, haven't decided yet. Took it for a test drive and it eliminated the sputter that i would get at the top the gear, right before shifting. Win. No. The sputter now appears to be in 3rd and 4th only, and way up in the RPMs, is there a rev limiter on this 88 4spd manual. Other than that, it drives flawlessly

That seems excessive. I mean 2 or 3 head gaskets is to be expected but 12? I wonder if something is cracked or warped that causes it to keep blowing. I can't imagine putting a 3.4 into a 4runner is any more difficult than putting a VG33 in a hardbody.

Motor was brand new about 5 years ago. Its been back to the supplier several times for head gaskets under warranty and he just got tired of pulling the motor and sending it back so he has been doing head gaskets ever since on it. Its not like he doesnt know what he is doing since he has been wrenching in professional environments since middle school. His 22re yota is NA and was putting down 160HP at the wheels. Now its getting a diesel.

The factory 3.0 in that particular 4 runner had almost a dozen head gaskets done then it had a catastrophic oil pressure loss that killed it. That true doesnt run hot, doesnt get driven too hard. Its just crap. The new motor is lightly built and took out the auto tranny behind it. Just a really really poor drivetrain.

I'm kind of surprised to hear that...not about the engine but the transmission. The Aisin A340 series (which is probably what that one has in it) are generally known for being very robust. I don't doubt it though. I had a similar thing happen with a subaru I was fixing for a guy years ago. I replaced the head gaskets (shocker) and the first thing the engine did with its newfound vigor was blow out the transmission. I lucked out big time and found a reman one in the junkyard that hadn't even been in there long enough to get dirty yet.

I finished up all the stuff on the old 4runner today. It runs and isn't making any noises it isn't supposed to be so I guess that's a success. New timing belt, water pump, plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets, camshaft circular plugs and a new fuel filter. All of this stuff was long overdue. Then I let get hot and immediately changed the oil to hopefully catch any chunks of crap that might have fallen in the oil pan. It needed an oil change anyways. Oh, and both the oil cooler hoses (you have to get them through the wheel well and it's a royal pain in the ass) because one of them had a small leak that I didn't know about until I pressure tested it before adding coolant. The finished product:

I didn't get any vehicle anything in today. Planned to get a sub and amp installed in the car today but parts didn't arrive in time. Did get to play with a prototype 6.5" sub. Dam. That little guy thumps! It thumps like you would only think a 12" sub does. The prototype 8" is amazing too. That one has easily an inch and a half of cone throw. I spent my day getting a CNC working. Something is off and it seems to no know it's bounds. Or something is off in the stepper settings.
