The mother of all starting glitches
New to the forum, lots of great info and seem to be knowledgeable folks. So I got a used 1996 Nissan truck and the guy said “there is a trick to starting it”. Ok cool. Well its more of a glitch. You put the key in and wait 3-4 seconds then it will crank… not 2 or 5 seconds… 3-4. If you try to crank before or after, it clicks as if a dead battery. If you do it in the designated 3-4 second window there are no issues. Also it doesnt matter if you out the key to “run” or just put the key in and leave it in the off position. Its an automatic 4 cyl.

My guess is that the ‘96 model has the floor shifter...

The good news is the problem is easily reproducible. This means we can troubleshoot it. For starters, does the truck have cruise control?
Make the starter fail by not performing the correct wait period, then check for 12vdc on the black/yellow wire on the ignition switch while the key is turned to start.

It is a floor shifter, no cruise control
