Default Oil Filter for VG30 2x4 with Headers

If any of you are brave enough to install headers on a 2x4 truck with the V6 engine, you will need to install this filter:

K&N HP-1010

The standard Nissan filter has too large of a diameter to fit out of the gap between the headers and the engine frame on the 2x4 trucks.

The K&N HP-1010 is about an inch less in diameter, so it just squeezes in.

The charts I see all say that this filter does not fit the VG30 engine, but it does.

Generally, I swap my oil only in the fall but do a full oil and filter swap in the spring. Since this K&N is a little smaller, I may start replacing the oil filter at each oil change.

Does anyone have any input on this, good or bad?

Normally I like to find the biggest filter that works for the most "filtering" ability but understand your reasoning going with a smaller filter. I might just change it a bit quicker than with a larger filter, but probably not necessary.

I would probably do the same in your position. I would wonder why they did not recommend the K&N filter for the V6 if it fits. There was a website telling about oil filters and what companies were better than others, think it was this one:
http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilters/opinions.html

With anything from the net be aware but I since they took the time do the research I have used it.

I always change the filter every time I change the oil. They're only like 10 bucks or something, so I'd rather be safe. That being said, the chart or whatever that Advance Auto uses has the wrong filters listed for my truck. I tried 2 of them that they said should fit and neither would work. I ended up having to take the filter off and write the model number down. I use a Purolator PureONE PL24457.

If I go to K&N's website and punch in my information, I get:

K&N All Results: 1994 NISSAN D21 3.0L

I see HP-2008, SP-2008, and SS-2008, but no 1010 numbers.

Like the 2008, my guess is HP-1010, SP-1010, and SS-1010 are all the same sizes, too.

In hindsight, I'm not sure where I got the HP-1010 filter. I've had it a few years, but stashed it somewhere and couldn't find it until I did the move. You find lots of stuff when you do a move!

I run Napa Gold unless the Platinum are on sale then I use those. New filter every oil change. I run the Napa filter #1348. They cross reference with some sort of toyota and are a lot smaller than the OEM size on the VG. I plan to do the oil filter relocation by the next oil change so that will no longer be a problem. Just melting the oil lines to worry about!

The K&N is a Mobil filter with a nut welded onto the top.

Maybe this could be another solution?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-Filter-S...RYd0FL&vxp=mtr
I know it's for a SR20DT, but I am pretty sure you can find one cheaper and you can even add an oil cooler.

I have an 87 D21 with a Turbo 2.3 Ford engine in it, I installed a remote oil filter and cooler- it runs the PH8A big Ford oil filter. Very nice...

Ooops, just noticed this thread is ancient...

Where did you locate your remote filter? I blew mine off again and am about to say screw it and get some braided lines made for it.

I was going to mount my filter here on my former Pathfinder but had problems with the adapter on the engine leaking so I said screw it, I had planned to install a piece of thick rubber, like a semi mud flap between the filter and the tire to protect it from debris coming out of the tire: (filter in pic was mock up filter, I would have used the same size in a Pure One)

I just recently changed the oil on this 88 reg. cab 4x4 I've been trying to sell. Even with the Jim Connor racing headers, getting the filter out was easy. Getting the filter loose was a chore because of the area to put a filter wrench, well, their was no room. I eventually got it off. Had to remove tire and the rubber shield to access it. Used a fram 3686 filter and fits without any issues.
