Default I want a double din, but I want to keep my square dash... Project log

I like the square dash, and while mine isn't perfect, it's in decent shape. But I'm building a very serious audio system in this truck, and I really want a touch screen radio! So I went to the junkyard and snagged a spare dash bezel so I could start playing with it, and come up with something. I plan to log the process here. Fair warning, this is not a simple job.

I started last night by cutting the bottom off the bezel, and then cutting that bottom section in half, so I could remove material from the middle and make it more narrow, so the sides will line up. The next step is to figure out how much longer you want to make the bezel. I went for a 4" opening, which fits around the radio perfectly. I then glued those halves back in place after lining everything up, and reinforced the cut with a metal bracket. To mock things up, I hot glued back strap into the gap where the extension is.

Next, I need to fiberglass the missing section, and then use fiberglass reinforced filler to shape that section, and smooth it out with body fill.

What do you guys think?

I approve, been thinking of ideas for the same thing. Usually involves a complete center console after my brain storming.

Looks good, I think I would rather lose the lighter and ash tray and have the head unit sit higher up than have it sit lower

I thought the same thing until I pulled it apart... The heater vents and what not are right in the way. Not enough depth to mount a radio. So, below it must go!

Progress!!! It definitely isn't done by any means, but at least I have the configuration figured out now! Now it is time to blend in the section around the radio, remove imperfections, and paint it!

More progress... Almost done!!! A bit more sanding, and then I'll shoot it with some semi-gloss black to match the factory color! I'm pretty stoked. After I finish this, I need to start working on my sub enclosure for the JL 12W7 I have waiting. The truck is already wired with 1/0AWG wire, and I already have my 4ch amp installed. I can't wait to hear it bump!

I used to have a pair of 10W7’s in my truck in a blow through. Back around 2000 or so, whenever they were first introduced. They sounded freaking great.

Looks good, about how much room does it leave below the radio to the transmission tunnel.
