I'm sure it might have been covered here before many times but I didn't see anything offhand. I've got a 92 extended cab 4 by 4 with 5-speed and the four-cylinder. I was wondering the obvious if I were to acquire a good V6 how about mating the transmission, wiring harness, and everything else. My engine is good and still running strong. I was just curious about the possibility whenever I get to that point.

You will need a V6 transmission and the v6 wiring harness. Those who have successfully installed the v6 usually have a wrecked v6 truck to pull parts from. Otherwise it is too expensive.

You cant use the 4cyl transmission. You have to swap in the v-6 trans as well. Its a complete harness swap as well.

From the previous posts, especially the one by David29, I would say you'd be better off just staying stock. Look at the bright side. No timing belt to change on a four cylinder, and no sudden surprise OF a breaking belt at a really bad moment. At least a chain starts rattling and gives you some warning.
Might actually be easier to just save up some money, buy a truck with the V6, and then sell the one you have to cover the rest of the costs for the V6 truck. Some of you guys are REALLY good at this swap stuff. Way better than me. I'm not bad at fixing these trucks, but even I haven't tried a complete harness switch. Too scary for me. ![]() Quote:

Another vote for making the stock engine run well. And buying a go-fast car for satisfying that desire.

Oh NOOOO..... I've done harness swaps in my younger days I even put a fuel injected 350 into an S10 but I'm not up for that anymore. The truck only has 130,000 miles on it I recently done a timing chain on the 4-cylinder. I think I'll just stay with what I got. I'm not that mad at them anymore. ![]() |

Well, you could always go to the KA24DE swap. (*I think*) That's the engine they have forums going on where they boost the HP to seriously ridiculous levels. 200-250 HP is typical, but they go much more sometimes. And the parts are available. I don't much about this DE swap stuff, but I guess it is done a lot.
There is some independent forum on this, with a bunch of posters, but I can't remember where it is. Hell, I don't even know if they put these engines into D21 trucks. I think most of them go into CARS. Someone more knowledgeable should chime in here...but I think these engines are in Frontiers.
