Gear ratio change 1996-1997 - Infamous Nissan

Anyone know why Nissan switched from 4.37 diff ratios to 4.63 on the 4x4 2.4L but only for the 1996 and 1997 model years?

4.6 was always used in 4x4 trucks with auto tranny's.

I couldn't find anything that I could read that confirmed or not the 4.6 only.

It might have had something to do with speed/acceleration or even emissions since the trucks only came with a 4 cylinder for 96 & 97.

I have a 4x4 pathy auto that has 4.375 gears.

All the docs I have show the 4.6 in the 4wd D21 as the only option with an auto tranny. Could have been something oddball. Happens all the time.

I suspected that as well. Since Nissan had no V6 option those years, they lowered the gearing to make up for that with the I4.

Manuals had 4.6 as well.

Yes. Everything I've seen points towards 4.6 being the optional gears for the manual with the 4.3 as standard.

Maybe because 96 97 trucks were only avaialble 4cyl. I have had 3 4wd pathy trucks with 4.375. 2 were stick and one was auto.
