Default Metal box bolted to floorboard

In my 1996 Hardbody, a metal box is bolted to the floorboard. I believe it might be housing of some type for the airbags.

I want to know if it can be safely removed so that I can install a center console that I removed from a late 90's model xterra.

Has anyone come across something like this?

Depends on your definition of safe. Removing it will disable the airbag, obviously you’re quite aware of that. The factory service manual says to disconnect the airbag connector before disconnecting the “diagnosis sensor unit” which is the box in question. It takes a T50 tamper resistant torx to remove the bolts.

You can get a console from a 96-97 extended cab hardbody to use without removing the sensor unit if you’d like another option that doesn’t disable the airbag.

I'm not sure why this one is so large. Most of the modules that im familiar with are must smaller.

If finding a 96-97 console was remotely possible, I’d have done it by now but I simply am unable to locate one

Is it possible to just relocate this to behind one of the seats?

It might fit under the driver seat? I don’t know if moving it will affect the operation of it or not.
