Default The little Battle Wagon, 99 Sentra

I figured I aught to write down the trials and tribulations of my new DD and beater car, a 1999 Nissan Senta GXE Limited.

First off it was cheap. 500 bucks. For 500 bucks I got a black sedan with crappy paint, 2 tires that are smaller than the other 2, a really noisy fart can, power everything, A/C, cruise and no stereo. All of this with 292k miles! Oh, and it has been part of a drug enforcement raid.

First time it was washed:

Got the cruise working. Apparently it goes through the horn fuse. The last people somehow managed to FUBAR the horn so it doesnt work and trying to use it blows the fuse killing the cruise. Added a stereo to find one speaker sounds blown and one doest work. Rears are 200w are Pioneer 2 way speakers.

Then found the bead on one of the too small rear tires to be FUBARed. Queue 2 new tires. It is nice to have 4 matching tire sizes.

Getting 32MPG combined at this point.

And had the driver side wheel bearing replaced. Didnt realize how loud it was. Its actually a quiet car to drive it you dont use the throttle.

A buddy of mine got some 160w Pioneer 2 way speakers with tweeters and cross overs for free so we dropped them in. Found the speaker that did not work was just not plugged in.Sounds pretty good but no thump at all.

Had one of the radiator fans die on me. Numb nuts before me wired everything with wire nuts. Even the stereo, which I fixed. The radiator fans are aftermarket. One is suffering, one is dead. Replaced the dead one. Numb nuts took power from the 12v plug and went to the fans so they are on all of the time when the ignition is on. I put a switch on there so it can be turned off. Later Ill do a proper temp controller and proper wiring.

35MPG combined on the last tank.

Tried my hand are defogging the headlights. They really were crap. They are still crap but put out more light now. Pondering projectors but dont want to spend any cash on the car.

Also tried my hand at removing the huge dent in the fender. The sheetmetal is way thicker than expected. Looks like crap but much less like crap than before!

Ran it hard, 7000RPM pulls and some 30MPH turns at 70MPH yesterday. I think I blew some crap out of it. Its running better now. It actually gets with the times when the VVT hits.

Today I cleaned out the MAF. Wow was there a lot of crap in there! That K&N oil filter they had in there didnt help any. I was cleaning chunks of stuff off the inside of the tube and the MAF assembly is no longer black and textured. Fired it up after that, it made a huge puff of gas and died. Fired it up again and nice smooth idle and a lower cold idle. Good stuff!

Itll be on a 600 mile trip next weekend! Hope it survives!

1132 your house, too?

It's got lots of miles on it. I wouldn't recommend visiting that 7000 RPM mark unless you are just trying to fuck it up.

Keep treating it nice, and you might have a decent commuter car for a couple of years. Liability insurance would be enough for that. Maybe uninsured motorist, if you were in Texas.

Cool little ride, and I think it looks decent myself.

wet sand the headlights, 600 to 2000 grit than some plastic polish, or just pick up the 3M kit for about $20, works very well.

Believe it or not the last photos are way better than they were. They were nasty smokers yellow. Did that with Comet clenser from the kitchen and some wax. The comet doesn't leave scratches like even a 800 grit sandpaper paper will. The rag was yellow after the first scrub down.

I'm throwing around the idea of getting some super cheap Amazon projectors for it.

1132 is the rental I used to live at. It was kind of a dump. I'm loving my new place other than the mortgage being twice what my rent was. It's easily 10 times the house though.

It's got the same coverage as the truck. I run about double the state minimum.

It's a neat little car. Thinking of trying to find a junk yard grill for it and give it the nose of the 95-98 model. No idea why they did the can get for 99 only. It's got some good stuff too like sway bars and stiffening braces. Handles way better than it should.

That little motor seems really happy at 6000RPM. Daily it'll never see above 2500RPM. Passing a semi on a 2 lane highway I'm going to give her all she's got! It redlines at 6900RPM from the factory. A tune will take it to 7400RPM and that tune plus some JWT cams is said to add about 40HP. I'm going to dink with the timing which is said to be good for 2-3HP on a dyno. The little GA motor seems to have a lot of untapped potential and apparently stupid reliable.

You know you just want to put a turbo kit on there.

I had a hard time convincing myself I wanted to take the time to put free speakers in it. To me it's a beater and something to drive to save some fuel.

If you need some convincing, add up how much time you spend sitting in this car. Then ask yourself if you'd like to spend a little time and money to enjoy yourself during all this time.

I mean, if you hate the car, don't spend anything on it.

I don't hate it but it's also not as loved as the hardbody. And it is high mileage.
