At least I think the D21 designation applies to both 2wd and 4wd pickups correct?
Anyhow, just picked this up towards the end of December. This thing is remarkably clean for a 1997, a term I know gets tossed around quite a lot but this one deserves the designation. 85k on the odometer, new tires/shocks and front to back fluid service. I'm going to change the trans fluid though to make sure it is in fact GL4 after reading about that. Somehow I totally missed that one of the cowl vent covers is missing until well after I had committed to it, replacement is on the way. Looking forward to many years of reliable service. Simply nothing else on the market around my way for similar dollars with these kind of miles. Looks like this forum still has some traffic. Seems like Zuckerberg has ruined auto forums across the internet. Hope this one doesn't fall victim. Last edited by 89'HBV6; 01-03-2022 at 10:14 PM. Reason: Embedded image... |

Welcome.
x2 on the Zuckerberg thing. Would've been great if he only got the trolls, but he got most everyone who was part of a forum family at one time. My experience says to spend the coin on Redline MT90 for the transmission. One change and never mess with it again unless it leaks or something. Good for another 250K miles or so. It will improve shifting. Especially in cold weather. Worth every penny. I buy my redline stuff from Summit Racing, if that helps.

Welcome to IN...
Yes, D21 is the designation for Nissan pickups from ~1986.5 till 1997. You have a nice, late model copy. This truck should last you a couple more decades, if properly maintained. Keep an eye on your mileage for maintance. There are some things that MUST be done on a regular basis, without fail. OK, regular is usually many miles... but the timing BELT should be done, per the time-line in the FSM. (DL it below, in my sig... v v v v)

![]() Thanks! Quote:
My personal feelings about FB aside, it is quite a tragedy the damage that platform has done to these vehicular knowledge bases. An absolute wealth of intellectual resource lost to an algorithm. Good to hear since that is what I bought. Snow on the ground at the moment so I'm daily driving a Forester until I get this fluid changed just to be on the safe side. Quote:
I was under the impression this engine used a timing chain? Guess I have some homework to do. Actually was thumbing through the FSM earlier today from the link in your sig ![]() Edit: I'm still under that impression (mine has the 4 cylinder). Unless you're just testing me... let me know if I'm missing something? Pretty big fan of preventative maintenance. Thanks! Really glad there is some life here. Maybe I'm just getting old. Yes, you have the 4... I understand it still has a timing belt.(?) (please correct me if I'm wrong, people...)
I stand corrected. Thanks alabama.

You’re wrong. All the 4 cyl were chains, all the V6 were belts. At least from the era in question.
