Default Auto (floor shift) tranny for a KE24E 4 cyl (RL4R01A)

KA24e (typo in the title and can't correct that)

Correct me if I'm wrong please, but from my research the RL4R01A auto tranny was used in the following:

1990-1997 HB
1990-1998 Pathfinder
1998-2001 Frontier

Is there a difference b/w the column shift and floor shift I need to know about other than the obvious of how things are connected on the truck side?

One thing I've never attempted in all my DIY doings is to rebuild an auto tranny.

This truck (1990 2wd ext cab, floor shift 4 cyl) when purchased, the tranny will not shift into any gear, fluid levels are good, no codes pulled. The engine (now that I got it running) does not react at all to any shifting. As I said, one thing I've never attempted is rebuilding a tranny. I know it'll cost me around $1,600-$2,000 for a rebuild. Not willing to put that much money into this project with everything else I have going on.

I'm tempted to go for it and try a rebuild. I've (for whatever reason) always been afraid to attempt that challenge, but in this case it won't cost me anything more but time (and the $200 or so for the rebuild kit if I screw this up).

I do have the FSM's all downloaded and plan to do some reading to see if they give good enough guidance. Anyone ever attempted this as a first time DIY? Or based on what it's doing, an idea of what part(s) would be bad? Almost to me seems like the shift solenoids aren't doing anything and maybe it's that simple. While awaiting any responses/ldeas, I'll be digging into the FSM to get some edumication

Did a quick scan of the FSM. Looks like I have plenty of diagnostics procedures in there, so I just need to get on that then unless I find a good deal on a used/rebuilt one first.

I found this one a couple hours from me and have been in talks with the owner. States it has a new tranny. Might be worth it to make the road trip, but I swear the wife will kill me if I put another vehicle on our property...........lol

Disregard fella's. I guess my "searching skills" are a little rusty.......lol

I found several threads (older) that talk about column to floor shift compatibilities.

I think I'm going to run through all the FSM troubleshooting guides before just buying up another project vehicle. My wife says she's going to change my ring tone in her phone to that of Sanford and Sons (the old TV show)..........hahaha

Too early to tell. I got no good history on this truck when I picked it up. I think I jumped the gun with posting this up before running through all the FSM troubleshooting procedures. And not to mention I could fit all the auto tranny knowledge in my brain into a Thimble and still have room left over...lol

I've got reading to do, but most likely will have to wait until after the holidays.

You could also consider swapping it to a 5 speed if the transmission turns out to be scrap metal. I believe you can still run the auto ECU.

It is an option. I've never been an AT fan. I have 2 other HB's (both '95 4x4 ext cab) reason being was to do the auto to 5 speed swap. The one I bought that has the 5 spd has a rotten frame (way beyond repair). It spent most of its life in the N Carolina mountains and snow. I just don't have the space to go that deep into a job until I can afford to build a shop at the house I'm at now. It sucks once having a big shop and having to move...................again..(military life)............Now I'm back to working in the driveway.

But it is Christmas, maybe I should ask Santa for a shop like I used to have
