Default 1987 Pathfinder WD21 Value?

Hi all,

I have an '87 WD21 Pathfinder with the VG30i engine and 5-speed manual transmission. Color is blue mist metallic. It has ~130k miles, and has only been owned by my family (CA driven its entire life). It is in decent cosmetic and mechanical condition for its age, but my mechanic tells me it needs ~$350 of work to pass CA smog (I need to get more details here, maybe cat-based?). The other main issues are a high idle and an electrical gremlin in the dome light / door switch circuit.

The drivetrain is still solid, and there is a certain charm to these old manual light-duty rigs. Normally I would value it at $1-2k, but the used market is nuts right now...

Any thoughts on a ballpark value?

Fix what you can. You'll get less people trying to jew-you-down and a better chance you'll get what you want... maybe even more!

Get more details from your mech... and let us know what he says. Details...

What do you think a reasonable asking price would be if I fix these 3x issues?

You're in Cali, I'm in WA. I can tell you what it could pull up here, but not down there. Cali is sooooo wierd when it come to pricing a car. You still have emissions law. So lame, IMPO. Get it to pass emissions and you'll get it to a happy buyer and get some good $$ for it...

Search your local CL, eBay Motors (sold) and any other sales sites you can think of... for local completed sales. Take the high/low and average? ...or find a few like yours and what they sold for.

Yea, you gotta do a bit of legwork with this... others (here) will prob have some input for ya. Hang tight...

I've checked a few sites, but haven't found any completed listings for '87. I found this BaT listing for an '88, but I don't expect anywhere near 10k. Ebay motors shows some early-mid 90s examples for 2-5k, so that's what I'm expecting.

My 87 pathy is insured for a declared value of 4500, and that probably would not replace it either.

Exactly... but again (and just reminding) you're in Cali. I was known to call your state, the "State of Confusion" for numerous reason. Resided there many decades ago and have no reason to... or intention of returning. (nothing intended towards yourself)

So, your state has artificial ways of inflating many things... value of cars, boobs, egos, inflation, reasons, Hollywood, ect... I'm sure you know what I'm talking about and if you have other things to add to the list, please do. LOL

Remember to factor in the exterior/interior condition of your ride and it's running condition when doing an evaluation. Important things to consider...

Any 4WD where the 4WD works and the engine runs without major issues is worth at least $2500. Yours is probably more. Forget the smog alert. Let the next buyer worry about that and don't say you don't know if it will pass or not. Claim ignorance on the issue if you are asked, and don't bring it up yourself.

Your rig is at 130,000 miles. That is nothing for that year. It's a big selling point.

Take out the dome light bulb and forget about it. Or pull the door switch wires, connect them together, and use the dome light switch to control the light. If you want to impress a buyer, switch out the bulb for an LED version in Cool White.

Clean and wax from top to bottom. Detail everything inside and out. If oil is dirty, change it. Do an engine bay detailing. Don't put shine on the tires. Just clean them.

Offer it up for $5,500 or best offer. Don't take less than $4,800. Maybe $4,500 if you like the buyer. Run an ad with pictures on Facebook Marketplace and drop the five bucks on Craigslist and do the same thing. Weed out the idiot callers or the people who don't leave a phone number and a name.

It will be gone in ten days or less. Trust me on this one. I'm a former used car salesman and I was good at my job. I would sell a car to anybody. Even a spy and bank robber.
