Default 87 D21 Sunroof Installation Disaster

Hello All,

I have an 87 D21 with a sunroof. I'm fairly confident it is stock but who knows at this point. I bought the truck 6 years ago and it had a piece of plastic in place of what should have been glass. The sunroof started leaking so I put some skylight caulking on it and it fixed it for years. I now have a wet drivers seat and headliner again. I tried to half ass it as the previous owner had done. 1 full tube of silicone later and it still leaks so I figured it was time to do it right.

My first step was to call a few shops, but only one shop would touch it and they wanted $800 plus to do it so now I'm here. I have not demoed the piece of plastic and caulking that is in there currently but I will begin doing that tonight. My questions lie in installation of the new product. I have never installed automotive glass so I'm not sure where to begin with as far as gaskets go. I'm not interested in this opening, I just want it water tight. Does anyone have any suggestions on materials for gaskets? The glass/plastic itself? I live in Colorado so UV protection and hail resistance are high priorities. I'm okay with spending money to do it "right", just not $800 haha.

Thanks,
Andrew

A picture is worth a 1000 words. If it is stock it pops out as quick as your tailgate comes off. If it’s not stock not sure what to tell you. The stock sunroof is actually what I called a moon roof. There is a clip at the rear of the glass panel that will unlatch and you then can tilt the glass up/forward by 90 degrees. At this point you can just slide it off the hinges and the panel is removed.

The stock sunroof will have four drain tubes, one in each corner. They are rubber tubes under the headliner and down each pillar. If they become clogged it could also cause leaks if a stock sunroof panel doesn’t fix it.

Edit... the more I think about it the more I believe this is your true problem but I would want to put my truck back to stock form and not rely on some homemade product that is questionable. It really depends on how much water is getting past this homemade install. The drain tubes can only flow so much.

Is your truck an ext cab, SE model? I ask this because most stock sunroofs are on the ext cab SE models. A sunroof on a std cab is rare. I know most SE models have the sunroof if equipped with power windows/locks/mirrors.

If it’s stock I would be searching junk yards for a 87-97 truck or 87-95 pathfinder with a sunroof. I bought a glass panel 15 years ago and it was around $75, the rubber around the panel will most likely look done for so don’t be shocked.

The truck is an SE standard cab. The hole might be original, the piece in it is definitely "aftermarket". I'll take some pictures when I get home

I have seen SE std cab trucks with the factory sunroof online but never in person.

Here are some pictures. I was thinking about getting a piece of 18 or 16ga stainless or anodized steel and just covering the hole. I figured I could attach it with some JB Locweld RTV. The sun coming through what's there now is ridiculously hot. Any foreseeable issues with this approach? If I have glass made, it won't match the curve and the plastic hasn't held up well.

That is correct, except half the gauges don't work, the cruise control doesn't work, it's a manual, 4wd, and the sound system is long gone lol
