Default Donor Vehicle Compatibility

I have a 1987 V6 4WD SE 5sp King cab.

I am looking for a donor vehicle for a complete wire harness swap. Truck ran great for two days after I bought it, and then I went to replace a plug for the TPS and peeled back some wire and started seeing issue after issue.

The dash is coming out right now to remove the entire harness so I have some peace of mind.

Whoever had it before me hardwired relays and the fusible links and it burned up and melted a lot of the harness wires.

I have come across some cheap pathfinders and want to know which parts are compatible as far as electrical, mechanical, interior, etc.

If anyone has a compatibility chart that would save me a lot of time!

My main goals for the donor are:

Compatible wire harness (keep all my options)
Rust free bed
Interior door panels
Spare motor
Spare wheel 15x7

Your best bet is going to be a Pre 89 pickup with the same drive train (90 they went to the vg30e). Pathfinder would probably be compatible as well - may have some 'length/placement' issues with plugs etc but should be serviceable with minor mods.

Nissan was pretty good about using the same harness regardless of options - so even a lesser spec'd truck with the same drivetrain should have a useable harness.

Ok so 86.5-89 is what I am looking for then.

I found a 89 pathfinder with the same drivetrain for 400 locally.

Can anyone verify this about the wire harness and drivetrain? If that is the case for the harness it really opens up options for me.

Pretty much all of it - except for the bed stuff, since the Pathfinder doesn't have a bed.

The 1996 (I think) Pathfinder started verging into it's own platform, so not as much of it will swap onto a Hardbody, but you are talking year 1987. Everything can be swapped back and forth except for the rear end stuff (bed, axle, brakes).

From what I have researched the V6 motors are a little different after 89? What would it take to swap one into my 86? Anyone have a link to a write-up on it?

They aren't a little different. They are a lot different.

They went from a throttle body on top to a multipoint injection system.

You'd either have to use just the block and heads or you would be trying to find a way to get the wiring harness and ECU out of the donor truck to work in yours.

Throttle body setup:

Multipoint injection setup:

Yeah that is what I found out while researching.

Seems my cheapest and best bet is to just go for a 86-89 4WD manual pathfinder or D21.

Thanks guys!
