Default My new 88

Just received her today, or yesterday by the time you guys read this. It started raining when I got her, so ill put in some more interesting pics this week.

Im the third proud owner of this 88 Z24 (they were all carbed in AUS) 2wd with 257 318km on the clock (or 160k miles). These trucks are fairly rare in Queensland, as most trucks had flatbeds put on them.

Original paint, in almost perfect condition. Never been repainted, but has had a few small (like pinky nail size) surface rust spots on roof and pillar area that I can see have been treated. No rust at all in bed or anywhere else. Has the datsun style front grille, which I think is interesting.

She's got aircon, blows cold but takes a bit to get there. No power steering, and the big ol original nissan wheel makes me feel like im driving a totally different beast.

The thermostat is stuck open or removed, as was common with these carbed engines. You technically dont need the thermostat, so most people cbf. But it might explain why there is a newish head, only hope that it was done properly. Apparently the head has got over 6000kms on it, but in my mind thats perfect 'fail anytime soon' territory.

The interior is immaculate. You can tell it really was garaged nearly everywhere it went.

Running on original nissan steelies 14's and have no intention of changing those. In fact, I plan on keeping this thing as original as possible. Im even going to get the original radiator recored by a specialist in town.

What it needs: Radiator recored and all radiator hoses, new door lock plastic thing installed, spare key cut, and just because im anal ill get the diff reconditioned in a few months.

Blows no smoke, might burn some oil, but has got new clutch (very light not sure if I like it yet) and new head.

The only big 'what if' is the second owner was not sure if the timing chain was done at the same time as the head (no receipt). Im going to assume 'no' and run with that for now. I didn't hear any ticks or whatnot, and im certain these engines didnt have the same problems as the KA.

Otherwise, drove like a dream, gears all shifted smoothly and had oodles of power for a completely stock standard 30 year old engine.

Nice truck! I don’t recall my Z24 having anywhere near as many issues as an of the KA’s I’ve had. I wasn’t nearly as mechanically inclined in my younger days as I am now so I would remember serious problems with the timing chain.

Cheers bama. I hope the engine holds up. No matter how low miles or how good it looks, it's still a 30 year old truck. Time will tell. Man I love these trucks tho!

Nice truck. Very unique in the front, different from US versions I think. One way you can tell if your chain/tensioner is wearing down is by listening to how much chain noise it makes on a cold start-up. If it goes on for more than a second or two...then chain/tensioner might be getting near service time. If you run new oil and some good additive (like Hilton's Hyperlube or similar) and the start up rattle goes away, your chain is probably fine.

Anyway...I like the truck quite a bit.

So the one really outstanding feature about this truck is that it has NISSAN airconditioning from JAPAN. Really rare in Australia, as 95% of all aircon was fitted aftermarket.

And for cadillacdude, here is a better view of the front. The grille is a crossover grille in Australia. It ranged from 1985 to 1989 and could either have had the NISSAN or DATSUN logo. Some trucks had the Nissan logo on the front and the Datsun logo embossed on rear of the bed, and vice versa. Strange. I think this grille also fits the later 720's in Australia.

Oh, and also genuine Nissan cow herder.

I dont know about the good ol' US of A, but in Australia we didnt have VINs until 1989.

The old chassis number is impossible to trace.
