Default Dumb question - difference between D21/HB

Other than engine - saw that post.

What makes the D21 different, or is it?

D21 was the designation nissan used to identify the chassis. the pathfinder of the same era was known as the WD21.

the hardbody was a nickname bestowed upon the truck because of the double steel walls that made the bed.

the nomenclature of nissan also changed in 1995. through 94 its listed as "hardbody" in 95 and newer its listed as "pickup" in parts catalogs. i too have a 96 and its a bit of an oddball

Cant be worse of an oddball than the 94! The 86.5 is also kinda weird. Its almost a full blown everything but still has differences, mainly in the ECM. 86.5 and maybe some of the 87 (Japan build) came in 2 tone paint.

I wouldn't go by what "part catalogs" call the trucks, some aftermarket catalogs list the hardbody as the 850, I haven't seen anything from Nissan where it shows as the 850.

In Nissan FAST the 9/94 to 8/97 is called "Hardbody/Truck" and is under the D21U model category

Earlier Hardbody's are listed under the D21 model

Where do I get Nissan FAST? Looks like it's a download of the parts catalog? Got a link?

In a quick look through my OEM 1990 Nissan sales flyer (U.S.), it only calls them "Nissan Hardbody" or "King Cab". No mention of "D21" or even "pickup."

If memory serves me correctly, the Owner's Manual says D21 but I'll have to look at it.

I see D21 or pickup in the parts vendors' lists. Rarely Hardbody.

Nissan FAST is available online, or it was, I've had it for a while. Some sites have instructions on how to set it up also.
