Default New Beater..Have questions

Hello Folks. New member. Former International Scout collector(Those things are getting hard to find these days). Recent purchase below:

86 d21 4X4. As far as I can tell it has stock suspension and the torsion key is maxed out. I got her cheap.. but she definitely needs some love(new tires, brakes, front end is wiggly as a Las Vegas streetwalker).

I have a coworker that has some 17inch wheels and tires off an Avalanche. I have checked the center bore and they will definitely fit. Over all they are about 2 inches taller than the 30 inch tires I currently have.

I have also located a Rough Country 2 inch lift including shocks for around 350.https://www.roughcountry.com/nissan-...kit-805n2.html

My plan is to get the lift kit. Replace all ball joints and tire rod ends and anything else on the front end that can be replaced. Install lift and shocks while she is in the air. And run through the brake system.

Question is: I have read many forum posts about Body lift vs suspension lift vs torsion key adjustment vs leave it all the hell alone. I do not intend to do any serious off-road play in her. Just hardware store runs and occasional trips to the deer woods.
1.IS the 2 inch suspension lift the way to go vs other routes?
2. Is the 1.5-2 inch change going to be detrimental to my drive line angles and life of the components?
3. Am I missing anything else I need to consider(I am already looking at front end, lift and clearance, brakes, oh and emergency brake needs to be adjusted)?

2-inch lift should not warrant drive shaft work. The torsion bars might do that up front, but you would need to get longer shackles for the back.

You would need to get a front end alignment afterwards, too.

I ordered the Rough Country 2 inch suspension lift that came with decent shocks on Friday.... I was surprised to have it arrive today. Also ordered all new ball joints and tie rod ends and center link. Have to wait for them to arrive(will do all at once) Tires from Avalanche at the end and yes.... I will get an alignment. Will update... Head to Dallas for work next week.. Will hopeful get it it done next weekend.

Take before and after pics.

We like them here, but you will appreciate having those more down the road.

A 1996? This I like. Straight injection and the OBD2 diagnostic system.

Get yourself a code reader at Amazon. There is a plug in for it near your fuse box. You will figure it out. One plug fits the reader, one does not. They come with good instructions. I like the one I linked because it provides good info for the price.

I apologize if you already knew all this stuff. As far as pictures and your rebuild story, you can create an entire thread on it, do an album if you wish. Those are always fun, and fun to read.

1986 actually. And I will probably post the progress pictures in this thread. All I did this weekend is replace the spark plugs, swapped out the steering wheel for a grant gt that I formerly had in my miata, and attempt to adjust out the parking brake. Did not take any pictures. I will start in at the end of the week when I get back from work trip.

Scrap the code reader idea, then. You get to remove the seat and count the blinks on the ECU.
