Default 2 piece lower radiator hose?

i have a 96 4cyl and it appears that i also have a 2 piece radiator hose. Does anyone know WHY thats the case? its like a 5in long piece off the block, coupler then the rest of the hose.

also, if you go to buy a new hose does it come in two pieces ?

I think they use those on the trucks with power steering? To keep it away from the belts

its a straight piece of pipe in the middle of a straight part of the hose so its really perplexing.

a friend thought it might be that the long part of the hose is used on a 240 and they needed like another 5in to work on the truck. hell if i know. but i need the little short length

No idea. Mine is just a regular hose. Manual steering btw. When I was buying new hoses for it a couple years ago I don't recall there being any distinction between power and manual steering. Weird.

I have this also. I also have power steering. I bought a new one not long ago that wouldn't work. It was gates brand. I haven't seen any notation of any difference in the hoses.

Side note, I replaced the metal union with one to use my fan controller probe.

it is exactly what bama said.... it is so the hose doesnt get chewed up by the belt. i actually had to replace that tube last year. i had changed the belt to a wider one, and it was wide enough to rub that aluminum housing just a tad and it cut a hole and spewed hot coolant everywhere. thank god i had one off my 86.5 truck. and i bought another one from JP to replace the one for my 86.

Sometimes you can just buy generic hose LONGER than you need and fit it into the engine bay so it doesn't rub on anything. I have done this with air hoses sometimes, and water hose occasionally.

i guess this really boils down to which one i order. i can deal with getting one that i need to add a short piece to.

Incidentally its the little 4inch straight piece that got PS fluid everywhere. im really tempted just to replace that bit and call it a day.
