Default LSD question?

Hello all. I read multiple forum posts on the D21s rear end, but was unable to find an answer to my specific question. I am in the process of looking at a 2wd manual hardbody made in 1993 which I know never came with limited slip. I may have located a rear differential from another 1993 hardbody 4x4 se that I believe has limited slip. Would this be a direct bolt in replacement, need modification, or incompatible. Thanks.

If they are both H233B axles, you (or a shop) could swap the LSD into your existing axle and you could keep the same gearing.

The main difference between the two is where the spring saddles are welded. The 2wd is "spring under' while the 4x4 is "spring over", which describes the location of the leaf pack relative to the axle.
To use a 4x4 axle on a 2wd, you (or someone) would have to cut off the spring saddles and weld new ones on.
If they are both pickups, the parking brakes should be compatible, or at least adaptable.

My axle came from a Pathfinder, which doesn't even HAVE leaf springs. I had to cut off all sorts of mounts and weld on spring saddles and shock mounts. It's not a big deal if you can do some fabrication work, or have access to someone who can.

The other consideration is the gear ratio. The 4x4 axle will most likely be around 4.63:1, which is going to be lower than what you have. More torque and acceleration at the expense of high RPM on the highway.

my 2wd 93 with the KA24E has the 3.54 gear ratio, so as was said swapping to a H233 from a 4x4 with most likely a 4.63 ratio would be a big change.

Got it. Is there any particular rhyme or reason as to what hardbodys have H233B axles? I know they had a couple different ones that were used.

2wd V6 hardbody's and 4 wd Hardbody (4 and 6 cylinder), Pathfinders will also but as was said since they use coil springs and a 4 link in the rear a lot more work would be needed to swap it into the pickup
