Default 1989 z74 water pump

Hello, new to Nissan pickups so sorry if I butcher any terminology. My father-in-law asked me to replace the alternator and water pump on his 1989 D21 hardbody 4x4 with the z74 engine. Replaced the alternator without issue, and was able to remove the old water pump fairly easily. This is the type of water pump where the fan clutch is pressed on to the pulley, which is pressed on to the water pump housing, so there's very little room to work, no space for a socket or even a ratcheting 10mm. The issues I'm having are first off lining the gasket up without it falling off. And the second is the longer bolts go in fine, but the two smaller bolts I can't get to catch a thread at all, and if I push the pump up flush to the block, the bolt heads disappear behind the pulley and get stuck there, at which point I have to take it back out and re-align bolts and gasket. I should also mention that the pump I took off had alignment dowels and the new one does not. Pried the old dowels off and tried putting them in the new pump and they just slide through the holes. Is there a special tool or trick for this basic maintenance item? Are my fingers just too fat? It's driving me insane.

Welcome to Infamous

use some RTV on the water pump to hold the gasket in place, put the long bolts into the water pump and through the gasket to also hold the gasket in place, once they are in and the water pump is tight to the block than put the short bolts back in.

You could also swap to a 280Z water pump which would make it a separate water pump that uses a normal fan clutch, see link below (unfortunetly pictures are no longer there):

water pump would look l like this:

Not sure about the dowels, but I would definitely look into doing the swap to the 280 water pump, so much easier to install the water pump alone and than add the pulley, than fan clutch with blade.

Ok I read that thread and it looks like you need to buy a different pulley, clutch, and fan to make it work? Will the belt that's meant for the truck still work with the alternator?

yes you would need the pulley from a KA24E engine and the fan clutch and fan blade, the pulley is a V belt pulley so it will work the same

I didn't have an issue when I had to change mine, but I used oem, I am guessing you used an a/m pump..

I had no issue either.....spent more time draining and replacing the coolant than i did replacing the pump. whole job took 40 minutes.
