Just a thought here...all of the cars I've driven that had pushbutton start require the brake to be depressed for the engine to start. Wouldn't it be nice if it was something as simple as a brake light switch? That seems to be the common denominator between the start circuit and the shift interlock. If it were my car I'd probably unplug the switch and jumper it momentarily just to see if it'll start.
