Default Remove burning building residue from paint?

Yesterday they building across the street from the office burned down. We were only at work for about an hour before we all left due to the power to the surrounding blocks being cut. In that hour, a bunch of black crap got all over my paint. I thought it was just ash and would brush or wash off, but after scrubbing for almost an hour I barely made any progress.

I don't know what this stuff is, but I can scrape it loose with my fingernail. Any advice?

Tar, perhaps.

Try rubbing some Goof-Off in a small corner to see if that cuts it.

Wash the truck with dish soap. Then do a clay bar on it. Then rewash with car wash. If it doesn't come off with the clay bar you'll need to either pick each one off with a finger nail or use a razor blade.

I tried the goof off but it just smeared it around. I took it by a body shop that's run by one of my coworker's father's-in-law. He rubbed on it for a bit with some 3M polish stuff and that seems to be taking it off. It'll take a pretty long time though. He recommended a car wash run by a couple of old guys, so I took it over there. They said they could clean it all off and wax it for $55. The 3M stuff is $30, so I figure it's worth it to just get those guys to do it.

This is on my E350 BTW, if it was on the hardbody I'd just leave it be lol. The paint on it is about 17 different shades of rattle can from being patched as I scratch it or it just comes off.

Will there be a little bit of insurance money coming from that building that burned down?

It seems like it should pay to get everyone's vehicles fixed.

I'm hoping so. Pretty much everyone in our parking lot was affected by it. I've emailed my insurance agent to ask how to even try to get some recuperation money. It's annoying. I'd just washed the car myself the evening before this crap happened.

bug and tar remover, baby oil, or any heavy orange/citrus type cleaner.

Bug and tar remover is the safest for the paint, but requires effort. Baby oil will leave oil marks if it soaks into the paint/under the clear (if gone). The citrus stuff is just a mess (smears it around).

Most likely it is the asphalt in the flat roof or the shingles. I work with spray on asphalt tar. I get the ish all over me! Baby oil is the best to take it off the skin.

I would be calling around to find out who owned the building then filing a claim

Clay bar should take that right off.
When I had my 01 Dakota years ago they painted the building next to my work and over spray got on all the cars, clay bar took it right off with very little effort.
