A word to the wise: there are different pumps for USA and Japan-built trucks
I think I goofed. My vin starts with a 1 I'm assuming that is USA and not Japan built. Apparently my pump is for Japan built truck, so does that mean it won't work properly? I think I have some time to cancel before it ships.

Based on the pictures of the Japan built assembly and the one I pulled out of the truck they look the same. Assuming the picture is correct on the product description.

Correct, 1 denotes that the truck was built in the USA. I don't think it matters where the pump itself was manufactured but whether or not it's made for a US or Japan production truck.

Looks like Rockauto has 2 pumps and both are for Japan built trucks and not USA. And every ebay listing and Amazon listing are all for Japan built trucks. Does that mean only

It looks like almost all of the pumps on advance's website are also for Japan-built trucks. Kinda weird since I haven't seen one newer than '89 or so that was built in Japan.

You may have better luck re-using the pump housing and just replacing the pump. Rockauto has several pumps that fit USA-built trucks but don't come as a complete assembly, like Spectra part#SP1168. I guess you could try one of the pumps from advance and return it if it ends up not fitting. Sorry I can't be of more help, hopefully someone who knows more about this than I do will chime in.

SBJ I appreciate your feedback. And hopefully this thread will be of use to others when they come across fuel pumps.

Unfortunately for me though the sensor (not sure it's exact name it's an elongated cylinder) at the bottom of the assembly broke when I was messing with the pump and with the float sticking I'm thinking for future it's better to replace the whole unit, as this truck has lots of life left.

Between ebay, amazon, rockauto, advancedauto and other online part stores all of the assemblies I found are for Japan built trucks. Not a single website showed a pump that is for a 1 or USA built trucks they all say for J or Japan built.

Napa, Autozone, do have them but at $350+ asking price, nissan dealership quoted $425 for theirs.

It's odd that online stores don't have the correct assembly but Napa, Autozone do unless their systems don't differentiate between 1 and J?

Google nissan d21 fuel pump. I see a whole lot of options for alot cheaper
i might be misunderstanding the listings then. All the ones i have seen and even the one i ordered ($135) initially say that they are for J model vin or Japan made truck. My truck vin starts with a 1. Can you point me to the ones that say they are for a USA model truck? It was pointed out that J and 1 fuel pumps are not compatible if they are put in the wrong model.

Ordering certain parts for these trucks can be tricky, but there's a couple of things you can do.

First...look on your door pillar tag, drivers side. Should say where your truck was manufactured, i.e. Smyrna, Tenn. or Japan.

Second, sometimes it's better if you just pull the part and when you pick up your new part at the store...take the old one with you and compare them closely first. Take that sucker right out of the box and lay them side by side on the counter before you pay your money. Or if you ordered online and it doesn't fit, get a credit right there. I've had to do this a couple of times.

My 89 was a Tennessee truck, and Advance never sold me a wrong part. I have to say that. Hope I got that right on the 'door pillar' reference. You know...open the driver door and there is that aluminum tag riveted there.

EDIT: Wait. I might be wrong on the location information on the tag. But I'm *pretty sure* the Japanese-made trucks have some stuff on that tag printed in Japanese AND English? And the US-made do not? I'm gonna get corrected here PDQ if I'm wrong.

Was that for the pump or the whole assembly? That's what I was quoted for the pump the assembly was $300+. Yep my truck is US made. So does anyone know where to order the pump assembly for US made trucks, everything I have seen online say that they are for Japan made trucks.
