Talking My new ride!

Just got back from picking up a new ride. I said I'd never own anything older than me, but... It's an '89 2 Door Pathfinder SE-V6 4x4. It has all the goodies; power windows & mirrors, a sunroof, cruise control, manual trans... The body looks amazing, so does the interior, but I does have the Pathfinder rust hole under the rear seats, and on the passenger fender, but other than that it's just surface rust.

that is one bad ass paint job on the hardbody. that is fantastic. nice looking pathy as well. and hang on to that 2 door pathy. that was the last year they were a 2 door model.

I am most certainly planning on keeping it. And that's one of the reasons I broke my rule about buying something older than me, because they weren't made after I was born and I really wanted one.

So with this Pathfinder came a salvage title, do to being seized and sold at auction... In order to get plates it has to go through an inspection process to make sure none of the parts are stolen and to get more money out of you. I just scheduled they appointment for the earliest time they had available, and that was in the middle of Sept.!!?!! This sucks, I have an awesome, new to me vehicle, that I won't be able to drive for a month and a half! I guess the good news is I have plenty of time to look it over and get to know it better. lol

It's up and running, but it's only a matter of time before it's down again... Once I get this Pathfinder on the road I plan on tearing into the HB and replace a lot of shit.

Alright everyone, especially the older Pathy owners, I want this to be more than just another "winter beater" for me. I don't want to have to get rid of it after winter just because something is wrong with it... And in order to do that, I am going to need your help.
  1. I need to figure out why the thing smells like gas. On the way home from picking it up, (hour and 45 minute drive) I had to stop a few times because the gas fumes were giving me a headache. It doesn't help that the exhaust is cut off right after the muffler, directly under the hole in the floor... Could the problem just be the fact that it doesn't have a cat. or are there other issues it could be? Even after it's sat all night, I can walk around it and smell gas.
  2. I also noticed that the temp was fine while on the move, but when we stopped on one of our breaks the temp climbed almost to the hot mark... Any ideas what could cause that?
  3. I want to know what you did about the whole under the rear seats. I'm guessing the best way to fix that is to cut out the bad and weld in new sheet metal? Sounds easy, but I know it's not.
  4. More on the rust issue, what about the frame, it looks like it's just surface rust, but my last truck rotted from the inside out... So how do I know if it's just surface rust or if it's cancerous.
  5. Something else I noticed on the way home was tire squealing in tight turns. (Update1. I'm pretty sure this is just because of low tire pressure...) This wouldn't alarm me if it wasn't a 4x4... I just want to make sure it's not stuck in 4wd... Other than the dashboard light, is there another way to tell if it's disengaged?
  6. On another 4x4 note, can someone tell me about the 4x4 engagement lever. Mine doesn't have the little diagram on the top so I don't know what position is what. (Update1. I figured it out; all the way forward is 2wd, back one is 4wd high, pushed down and back one more is 4wd low...)
  7. I would like to hear what you believe I need to keep an eye on. Give me ideas and I'll post picks of what mine is like so you can see and give me your opinion on my situation...
Update1. I'm good on # 5 & 6 now.

I know that's a lot of questions, but like I said before, I really want to keep this thing as long as possible.

Though this was amazing. Allen key holding up the rear glass. If you look closely you can kinda see another hole in the rod... Variety.
