Default '94 4x4 auto SE with tranny problem

Hello pathfinder or transmission gurus. I am looking at this '94 pathy auto 4x4 as a daily driver for my girlfriend. It only has 105k on it and the trans doesn't shift out of 1st gear. No matter what (any 2wd or 4wd position I put the transfer case seems to change this). Now I know transmissions can go bad at or around or even before the 100k mark but the vehicle is in such pristine condition otherwise I find it kindve odd. Is there something that may limit the transmission to stay in 1st, say a computer or locking button? I'm new to 4wd so anything can help.

Another question, what have you 4x4 autos paid to rebuild your transmissions? Thanks

My former 87 hardbody non over drive trans cost me $2K or more the 3 times it was rebuilt, first time was at 130K, tranny shop said he has seen them fail with far less mileage and mine didn't owe me anything. After first rebuild a tranny cooler and temp gauge was installed.

I would look for an xterra tranny and do the swap, they are stronger.

Okay thanks for the info. Damn you rebuilt it 3 times!? im going to call around and see what shops are charging nowadays. The wholesaler dropped the price to 1K after i brought the issue to his attention. 3k is quite alot for a wd21 what do you guys think? Heres a link to the ad --

I think Tony told me that use one out of a supercharged xterra. Don't remember the year off hand, but it may be in forum if you search xterra trans.

no, a normal xterra, there is info on the NPORA forum on what has to be done,

some info from my buddy Adam that did the swap in his pathfinder:

"if you don't get the vent lines from the xterra, you'll need some longer hose, no big deal. But my trans came with everything. All the fluid lines and connections/bolts are the same. The filter and pan gasket are the same as the wd21 one.
Other things that are the same:
-transfer case shifter
-neutral safety switch
-trans line banjo bolts
-trans mount
-slip yoke
-all other connectors other than the ones I mentioned above.

There is a sub harness that connects to the speed sensor and 4wd light sensors, you need to use the one off the wd21 trans as the plug is different at the engine bay side. No big deal, took 2 seconds to plug into the new tranny. There is more than enough length in the harness to reach the plugs under the hood."

couldn't find an actual write up but Adam has done the swap and he would be able to answer any questions, you would have to join NPORA to ask though
