i used to use valvoline max-life...then i switched over to mobil1 synthetic. then someone told me switching to synthetics after so many miles is bad for seals, so i just quit changing it altogether.

i'm j/k i use the mobil 1 with OEM filters. but, i DID hear that switching to synthetics with high milage is bad..........so??????????????

I switched my D21 2.4 to Mobil 1, filter and oil, @ 92,000 and now at 95 and it hasn't used a drop. I change them every 5,000 miles religiously. To the best of my knowledge it has never used any oil between changes, and the synthetic didn't change that.

My other car on Mobil 1, a 93 Civic, has well over 200K on it and uses a quart or so between 5,000 mile changes ...big deal ...I just never let it get low. It's still clean as new under the valve cover. Amazing!

IMO, synthetics offer the very best protection you can give your vehicle, and extending the oil change intervals to 5K offsets the additional cost. The best thing about synthetics is that they won't burn off and leave harmful carbon deposits throughout your engine like most oils do.

I use Castrol 10-30 with Oem Nissan oil filters on all my vehicles. Never have had an issue and have been using this setup since I have owned Nissans.

from what ive heard, older engines that use standard oil will have gunk build up. gunk normally = bad, but sometimes it can seal up a small oil leak.

synthetics will often clean out the gunk, and let the existing leak show itself. so people think "the synthetic is making my engine leak. this shit is horrible" when in reality it did you a favor and alerted you to a potential problem.

I use Penzoil Platinum with either Purolator or Napa Gold (Wix) filters in EVERYTHING I own.

I've switched 200,000 mile Hondas to synthetic. After a few changes, the additives they put in to swell the seals starts working and you start noticing fewer leaks. One of my Hondas had a weeping oil pan gasket that was cured after about 3 oil changes (about 12,000 miles or so).

One thing to remember is that synthetic has a longer life than dino, so 5,000 miles is nothing, 10,000 miles is possible. You just have to be more careful about oil level at higher mileages.
