I’m looking for a good Hot Wheels starter set for my grandson. I really think he would like it and so would I.
I know very little about them so what would be a good set?

How old is he? What's he "in to"? Are you going for new or used?
There are tons of options, as you may already know. Hit your local Wally and see what's available...

If he doesn't have any yet, buy him ONE. It will become his favorite. It will have value above all that follow. There may be cooler ones, but none will take the place of that first one.
If you buy a set, you may lose that "First Hot Wheels" phenomenon. My two boys are grown men, but they have their first car put away somewhere. It's uncanny.

Be careful what you start, a buck a piece at my local supermarket, it's like crack. I'm well over three hundred cars with only a very select number of duplicates (Miatas, go figure) and no "fantasy" cars, save one or two I thought were really cool, all are street driven 1:64 scale replicas and 99.9% are still in their packaging. I've even strayed into, dare I say it, Matchbox! Same criteria though, real cars with no dupes. I have broken a bunch of those out of their cards though.
