Default Factory Tow Package Mounting Issues

Hey All,

When I purchased my 1996 SE King Cab 4x4 a few months ago the, what I believe to be, factory tow package was not on the truck. The prior flipper owner said he could not install it when he replaced the rear bumper as it was just too heavy. I am wanting to tow my small motorcycle trailer this weekend to go offroading with my boys.

So, I took the tow bar to my mechanic buddy and we attempted to install. Sadly, we could not make it fit properly with the bumper. I was left to believe that maybe the replacement bumper is not correct, but looking at pics on the web, I believe it is.

Does anybody have the factory tow package on their truck and be willing to post some pics of how the bracket, tow bar and bumper are supposed to come together?

Thanks you!

Can you post a pic of your bumper?

Tow bar not a trailer hitch? Never seen a tow bar as a factory option.

We made it work, but obviously not correct. The bumper will hit the top of the hitch if installed correctly.

Right, trailer hitch, not tow bar. I have the original dealer brochure and it does show tow package/trailer hitch as an option.

thanks!

That is exactly how mine looked. The lip of the frame hitch is at the edge of the bumper. It did not interfere with sliding the hitch in or out. I eventually found a factory rollpan and removed the bumper. But yes it is on there correctly. It hides in plain sight. I hope you bought the plug and play trailer harness. They are about 30 bucks. No splicing.

Not sure if you can see from the side pic, but it really does not fit. If I slide the bumper back and attach where it was before the hitch was installed, it sits on top of the hitch and will not mount. We mounted the bumper temporarily with only one bolt on each side.

I believe this is a factory set-up. The wiring harness is already in place.

I would love to see where/how anybody has it mounted on the frame extension that the bumper mounts to.

thanks again!

There is a Class 3 hitch available for HBs but it is a one size fits all type. Finding a factory one this day and age it might be too far gone with rust.

you should have multiple mounting holes in the bumper mtg brkts, you should also have a few for mounting the hitch, are you mtg the hitch to the bmpr brkts are directly to the frame? if I remember right, the hitch bolts went thru the bmpr brkts into the frame.. but then again I did that 30yrs ago, I would have to look lol
