That's the plan. I'll be doing a leak down test at some point to determine if being out of time has bent any valves.
Would burnt coolant coming out the exhaust confirm bent valves? I have confirmed a bad seal given the chocolate milkshake of engine oil, how would coolant, heated by hot oil, escape the crank case? I'm thinking through a bent valve or the head gasket, but I don't think its the head gasket. Any other way it could be getting out of the crankcase? |

You could use a bore scope to look through the spark plug holes at the top of the pistons to see if there is any indication of contact with the valves.

Thanks, I may do that. If the pistons have been marred by valve strikes, would they need to be replaced? Does not seem like that would affect compression.

My wife had a 97 that suddenly blew the head gasket. There were deep marks on all of the pistons. Who knows how long those had been there?

The pistons will have relief cuts in them from the factory so make sure you don’t mistake those for valve impact marks.

I’m pretty sure the pistons don’t have relief cuts for the valves.

Any put RTV or other sealant on their valve cover bolts prior to installing?
Trying to think of every way to prevent coolant leaking into the crankcase. |

I’ve never used RTV on the bolts, just a thin smear on both sides of the gasket

Whatever I have laying around. Just to hold the gasket in place during installation
