Newer ECUs added more functionality and requirements. I know 96 and 97 had OBD2.

No, the replacement ecu i got to see if it fixed the no start problem i had before, (Had also had intermittent ecu code pop up) is i believe from a 91 or there abouts out of a manual v6. Started right up and ran with good idle for 30 mins or so. Thought my problem was fixed. I had tried the ecu that was original to my truck out of a whim, not expecting it to start, ended up starting. Its the same code as the ecu i swapped it with except my original one had an A at the end of it.
