I've got an '89 Sentra and when it is cold it revs up rather high, then when it warms up after a minute or so, it really screams, at least 2,000rpm.
Once it warms up, it idles like it should. Where should I look? |

I don’t know very much about Sentras but I’d check the coolant temperature sensor connection for corrosion and security.

Sounds like an air leak until the surrounding metal or material expands and either stops the leak or reduces it to where you can’t hear it anymore.
You should check the throttle body’s base gasket. There’s normally one there that should be changed with regular maintenance to avoid air leaks and seized engines. Find a service manual and read it. You will learn a lot about your vehicle and be able to fix problems. |

wow, trying to remember, should be 2 FICD (fast idle control device,pt#22664-84A10) solenoids in the base of the throttle body, should have one harness going to both, it also has a "wax kit"(pt#16391-84A00) which will produce a high idle until it warms up, see if any of that helps...

Not yet, I have 2 brake jobs (BJs) ahead of it. One of the BJs is on the Sentra, it needs rear shoes.

My daughter reports that after changing about 6' of vacuum line, that things are much different. Imagine that....31 year old vacuum hose leaks.

Always recommend replacing all the vacuum lines on older vehicles, a small crack in a hose can cause issues.
Thermal element may be cause of high idle as was mentioned. I had a base 90 Sentra for a while: ![]()

My buddy in high school had an ‘89 Sentra with a 5-spd. and white exterior. That thing took us everywhere!
Sorry no pics. But looks just like aHardb0dy’s former Sentra. Nissan has/had a 1.6L turbocharged Sentra a few years back. That would be fun! |
