power steering - Infamous Nissan

I have a D21 pickup 6 cylinder with 2 wheel drive.

About 6 months ago the power steering started making noise and the steering was getting sluggish. I checked the fluid level and it was low. I added fluid and problem solved.

Now the steering is messed up again, but the fluid level is at full--and there is no noise. It's acting almost like the power steering isn't working. I need to tug on the wheel quite a bit. It's no problem at driving speed but it's an obvious problem getting in and out of parking spaces.

I don't wanna throw parts and money at it, so this is my first stop.

I forgot to add it's a 93.

I assume, if the belt is tight...and no restriction in the system, and no leaks...

Pump is weak.

The pump is full of fluid and the belt is tight. I don't know how I'd check for restrictions.

I think your last sentence is probably the answer.

But how about the steering box itself, before I go out and buy a pump?

I've never heard of the steering box itself going out. It might leak or the gears might somehow strip, but I don't think there is much else to them.
