Default Why not a 4.3L Vortec?

I've been reading a bunch of stuff on the 5.3LS and 6.0LS swaps, but I really haven't seen anything about a 4.3L Vortec swap. It seems to me that it would fit better in these small trucks and 285HP (roughly 20HP less than the 5.3LS) would be plenty. What am I missing? Is the size difference not that great and so folks just go with the larger displacement? PFA...

I went with a 5.3 because a friend gave me a great deal on a complete, running Z71. I stripped the Nissan, including the firewall, and after driving the Chevy for three months, gutted that.

I used almost all of it. Complete fuel system. HVAC. The works. That's what made sense to me.

If I'd gotten a great deal on a 4.3 vortec I may have done the project with that. I do love not having a distributor, though.

The 4.3 would be a good candidate, but I do recommend getting a donor vehicle so you have all of the wiring, mounts, etc that you don't even think about when starting a repower project. It will save you a fortune.

That's the plan, either way I go. Full motor/trans/electronics swap. What motor mounts did you end up using, and did you have to modify the firewall?

Check my "V8 Conversion " link for the full build. I guess you could start with the video "The FM "Z71 Conversion" Explained Vid"

I used the Chevy mounts and part of the frame that they were bolted to, and grafted those sections on. Like I said, a donor vehicle is invaluable.
I swapped they entire firewall to the Chevy and used everything Chevy on both sides of that. Dash, HVAC, steering column, brakes, you name it.

Well the EcoTec 4.3L you would need the complete system to get the 285 HP from the engine. IIRC this would include 2 or 3 computers.

Just curious, what sort of 4.3 will make that much HP?

I was thinking that 225 was about it.

If it were me, I'd put in a TBI 4.3, and that is about 175HP....but, it is a durable motor.
